Post Operative Instructions Following Your Child’s Dental Extraction

After a child undergoes a dental extraction, it’s important to follow post-operative instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and to minimize discomfort. Here are typical post-operative instructions that parents should follow:

  1. Bleeding: Some bleeding is normal after an extraction. Have your child bite down gently on a gauze or a moistened tea bag placed over the extraction site for about 20 minutes to control bleeding. Replace the gauze as needed until bleeding stops.
  2. Pain Management: Your dentist may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) to help manage any discomfort. Follow dosing instructions carefully.
  3. Diet: Encourage your child to eat soft foods that are easy to chew and swallow, such as yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and soup. Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods that could irritate the extraction site.
  4. Hydration: Ensure your child drinks plenty of fluids, but avoid using a straw for the first 24 hours to prevent dislodging the blood clot that forms in the extraction site.
  5. Oral Hygiene: Your dentist may recommend gently rinsing the mouth with warm salt water after 24 hours to keep the extraction site clean. Avoid vigorous rinsing or brushing near the extraction site for the first few days.
  6. Dental Freezing: If your child has been given dental freezing, watch that they do not chew, suck or bite on their lips and cheeks for 2 hours following the procedure.

It’s essential to follow these instructions closely to promote healing and reduce the risk of complications after a dental extraction. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist for clarification or further guidance.
